Wednesday

whew! thanks everybody!

It was great to meet so many new people this weekend at the Renegade Fair! New Yorkers are awesomely fun and appreciative! I had so much good feedback this time around, it's really lighting my fire.

I have to send a big shout out to my booth neighbors, all who helped out in various ways, especially when the mini cyclone of armageddon passed through McCarren Park! Kimberly of Chez Sucre Chez ...

... Mel of Spread the Love ...

and Mimi Kirchner who is an Etsy celebrity! I can see why - check out these amazing tattoo dolls! (Here's a video about her) I am so crushing on her mustachioed circus men ...

oh, and I how can I forget to thank the awesome marching band, the "What Cheer? Brigade" ...

and the amazing Magnolia Photo booth that was parked across from us!

Fun times all around! Funny how when you are in the middle of car fire (not ours) traffic, covered in sweat, it's about to hail a tornado, and your feet are so ungodly dirty you say how you'll never do one of these fairs again. But now when I look back it was so fun and I can't wait to do another one!

Monday

market re-cap

So first off I'm totally overwhelmed and overstimulated by this past weekend so I'm having trouble finding a good way to summarize everything.

Let's start with a little description for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about. The Buyer's Market of American Craft was held this weekend at the Philadelphia Convention Center. (I wasn't there to sell, I just went to check it out and see if it's a place I could sell at, once I get my sh*t together that is) . It's otherwise known as the "Rosen Show" because it is "produced" by Wendy Rosen, what that means I don't know.

It is a wholesale show only, meaning that it is only open to vetted buyers - boutique owners, museum shop managers, etc. The general public cannot get in unless you score a guest pass or press pass (lucky Tara and Alex!) I got in because I signed up for a mentorship class with the Arts Business Institute -- how they are related to the Buyers Market and Wendy Rosen, I don't know, the whole show world is kind of hard to figure out.

But I do know that this show is for products handmade in the United States only, which is kind of big deal and if you ever go to a gift show you'll see that it's quite a challange competing with the production capacities of the made-in-china wares there. interesting.

all these pics are from the catalog which I illegally nicked since they were super possessive about them so don't tell on me ok?

so let me say that this show was started in the 70's. and you can tell. not that the work was poor quality or anything by any means, but about half the vendors seemed I don't know, dated.

BUT!

I did see that there were some really great fresh faced etsy/indie/younger sellers there ...

Modern June aprons and retro goodness, Tasha McKelvey's sweet pottery, miscellaneous goodies from Zou Zou's Basement and lovely things from Silver Tree Art - all ladies from the shared booth of the Richmond etsy team.

a few divulged that they were highly pursued by the show organizers and given booth discounts - either because 1) their work kicks ass 2) they are trying to get fresh blood or 3) they needed to fill spots - probably a little of all three. Just a side note that a booth here at the summer show costs around $1,500 +all sorts of fees.

(btw Erica Stankwytch Bailey was so nice and had such awesome stuff!)

The main problem was that while there was some effort to get some younger vendors, it seemed that there really weren't that many young buyers there. in general it's geared toward the 50's age group and their sensibility. and it's obvious. But then again how many younger people are opening brick and mortar shops that can afford to buy items wholesale? with etsy, online shopping, etc everything has really changed...and everything is usually consignment.

but then there are some cool people there buying for places you'd never expect - LLBean for one, but more interestingly a person who represented over 300 zoo and National Park stores! oh the buckhorns would have been scooped up!!! DANG. I hope they found Figs n' Ginger!

While we're discussing brick and mortars, I stopped by Art Star boutique and I must say those girls really have it together - a beautiful space, totally professional, nice stuff, etc etc. You should get on over there if you can ...

so overall, I think if you want to really make a serious living at the craft thing you have to do it all - wholesale, consignment, etsy, gift shows, renegade, all of it. but manage to have a life at the same time. possible??

next post I'll talk about what the show people said about my work during the critique - the word "sexy" was used. ewww. but good I guess.

Sunday

more love ...

more inspiration board/jewelry wall love:

from the sick (in a good way) blog, Loveology -- big hugs from the PA Dutch to the "real" Dutch!

(p.s. no comment on this weekend's craft show. just no comment. wait wait, I must comment, I feel like I'm too old to be shlepping my wares around - there's gotta be a better way, right? but I read about people who do the craft show "circuit" and they appear pretty successful - is it really worth it? thoughts?)

Tuesday

brooklyn was good

So my first time at the "famous" Renegade fair was pretty successful! The weather was grand and we had a great location under a tree, right at at entrance (which made for speedy car loading for once!)  Anyone have any opinions on the layout this year? not sure about being separated from the main arena of tents, but the shade and space were super nice if we're grading by sanity levels ...

Here are some pics from Sarah Foley:

Sales were good, and I got some positive feedback so that was great - I foolishly ran out of boxes but several people just put something on didn't want to take it off so problem solved! Sara and I also got to stay in Brooklyn's new hotel (yes, Brooklyn has a hotel, and they give you free slippers!!!!!) It's Hotel Le Jolie, I highly recommend it if you for some reason you are aching to hang out amongst the tight-jeaned flourescent ray-banned masses ...

More highlights from Renegade can be found here, here, here, and here.

Friday

oh yeah. that's some good stuff right there.

New York Magazine did a nice slideshow feature on accessories on sale at Renegade.

Featured my nouveau hoops, NICE! Check it out here.

here we go again!

Part 2 of marathon craft show month ... this time NEW YORK! wa hoo!

I'll be sharing a booth with Sara again, #18 not far from the main entrance of McCarren Park at Bedford Ave and N.12th Street.  Fellow Z-town member, Kimberley is in booth #4!

More details here ...

Wednesday

re-cap

so here are the highlights from the weekend at Art Star:
  • Jay McCarroll, winner of Project Runway, fondled Kimberely's wares
  • AAA came within 5 minutes
  • the Captain Morgan's stand complemented the smoothie stand REALLY well
  • best customer quote of the day "the problem with being over-educated is that I can't wear antlers without feeling like I'm being insulting to hunters"
  • met some great other crafters, especially Alex, who's opening a boutique in West Reading
  • and lastly, pretty decent sales for a first show
well - I learned a lot, got a little intimidated, got some ideas for the future business growth - all in all, good times ...

Friday

pre-show show

so I'm ready. I think. I wasn't really realizing how much work 3 consecutive weekend craft shows was going to be, but alas I committed to it and I now have to deal with it!

So here's everything finally splayed in one place on my coffee table (the largest table I own) - it ended up looking like a trippy mandala, pretty cool:

Crafted up some mini buckhorns, baby birds and bees, and tiny blossom necklaces just for the show (sorry for that reflection, bad photo)

also made up what felt like a gabillion stickers for my packaging tins, here's the bottom of the box:

then I popped in a leonardo dicaprio movie marathon (gangs of new york & the aviator) and 3 hours later everything was packaged up:

and of course because I've got librarian tendencies I had to go and catalog them didn't I? in an old lantern slide box naturally:

and being a obsesser of efficiency in design (must be all that backpacking) I managed to get everything safely packed in this little pile, a small folding table is hiding in the back of the stack, awaiting transport on a dolly across the dirty streets of Philly. there's a sneek peek at the little hanging sign for the booth, being shared with Sara:

and bingo bango just like that I'm all set. Hope to see at Art Star! Next week, Renegade!

Saturday

bling-a-ding-ding

here's why I've been neglecting my blog duties for the past few days (maybe weeks?)

... craft show inventory in various states of polish - jeez, as I look at it now it still doesn't seem like enough. not that I expect to sell out or anything!  stressed out about selling to much, stressed out about selling too little. AHH!

Tuesday

better get to work!

very exciting news in my inbox today - I will be an official vendor at the Art Star Craft Bazaar in Phila May 30th & 31st on Penn's Landing AND then again the next weekend at the Renegade Craft Fair at the McCarren Park in Brooklyn , June 6-7th! yikes! better get cutting!

I'll be sharing a booth both times with fellow Z-town Made member and sickeningly talented Sara Smedley and her wonderful silkscreens:

and somewhere in the sea of tents you'll find another uber talented Kutztown-ian and Z-town member, Chez Sucre Chez:

and I'm pretty sure Mel of Spread the Love will be at Art Star too. woo hoo ladies! should be fun!

come load up on necklaces, aprons, illustrations, needlepoints, placemats, earrings, totes, napkins, postcards, etc etc.

Thursday

thanks you thanks you

Here's a funny little interview that Debbie from Etsy Featured Artist posted about me. These things are always embarrassing ... but maybe it brings some traffic, who knows if this internet thing really works.

are pins nerdy?

I'm not sure about pins ... are they only for old ladies? librarians? moms? not sure.   But I like this new pin of mine enough to consider wearing it to work, where I am surrounded by some very arty teenagers in tight jeans and big chunky glasses, full of judgmental ennui.

I've almost got the woodland thing out of my system, a few more floral hoop type earrings and baby birds coming along then I'm out of the woods, working on a new "line" ... but until then I have to pass along these lovely prints from Traci Edwards, she makes the best cards and band posters. so adorable, cool, and woodlandish without being cutesy, an accomlishment!

This is pretty much near perfect for me...victorian, sweet, tough, black, awesome.

This room pretty much sums up this post. maybe for my next house ...

Monday

in the mix!

special thanks to Liana way out in San Fran for including the buckhorns in a Friday Mixed Plate feature.  She has really great taste and a wicked nice blog,  Mixed Plate. I love it when people write to tell you they have posted about you, such nice blog manners! Check her out!
